While I pledge guilty of being a serious coffee addict, on gloomy days I like to add a little sweetness to my daily cup(s). And I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t somehow turn an ordinary cup of hot cocoa into superfood deliciousness.
I first came across the idea of adding maca and coconut sugar to my organic cocoa after we introduced a pre-made macaccino mixture to our cafes. Sure, it was delicious, but pricey as well, so I thought, why not make one on my own. This way I have complete control over sweetness, intensity and maca content while making a substantial saving as well.
First, a quick breakdown of the sole three ingredients’ health benefits:
Raw Cocoa – cocoa contains large amounts of antioxidants (twice as much as green tea and up to 20 times as much as blueberries to be exact). Cocoa is shown to protect us against cancer, help us ward off heart disease and lower our cholesterol levels.
Maca – maca has miraculous effects on our hormonal balance, increasing libido, improving sexual performance, reducing symptoms of hormonal issues, such as PMS, depression and anxiety and improving fertility. It also helps our bodies deal with stress and increases our energy levels.
Coconut Sugar – a wholesome sugar substitute is high in nutrients but with a low GI. Coconut sugar contains an abundance of amino acids, 12 of the essential B vitamins (it is especially high in vitamin B8, helping us anxiety and sadness) and is an excellent source of trace minerals. Due to its low GI, it is suitable for diabetics.
So let’s make our yummy macaccino mix using our three simple ingredients.
